I once saw two wedding photography business on sale in Maui (the same week). One was being offered for $15K and another was being offered for $950K. Same small island, same business but one was hugely more profitable. So it isn’t so much the business but who you are.

In wedding business often your customers (clients) are from referrals of other clients. So in wedding business you’ll find that you should give yourself a minimum of 3 years (from first wedding season) for you to get some decent business going. If you are not willing to give yourself the time you might as well give it up now. Also wedding planning is different in that you have to wait almost a year from deposit to final event.

Now you are in Hawaii it is little bit different (you have good weather all year round – I know I live in NYC by used to live in Maui in the past).

My wedding planners was real good but couldn’t wait the third season and the team broke up during the second season.

Don’t put all your eggs in the wedding planning basket. Do your other event planning while waiting for that third season to come around – the pay back will be little bit more immediate – and it will allow you to pay your bills till then.

You’re going to have to get established and do a lot of hustling to get a reputation. It’s pretty much like any other business. I would check into bridal shows, etc. to get your name out there. Figure out ways to draw people to your site too.
