What should I do on my first trip to Hawaii?

Robert asked:

I’ll be going alone. I’m attending a wedding in Oahu, but have a total of 10 days to spend there. I’m fairly young (30-ish) and just looking for a nice variety of things to do.

If you are renting a car, go to the north shore on a weekday. Check the surf report in the local paper. Don’t forget to get “shave ice” in Haleiwa.

The Polynesian Cultural Center (around $60) is a half day thing but it is also on the north shore.

Hike Diamond Head. If you are by yourself, bring some kind of flashlight. There is a part where you walk through a 50-100yard tunnel and it is pitch black. Or you can do what I did and walk with someone who has one. Time, about 1-2 hours.

Arizona Memorial. It is first come first serve for the ferry. There are some very good historical artifacts there in the museums and there is also a brief film about the “day of Infamy.”

Ala Moana is a great place for people watching.

Lastly, pick up the Pennsaver for adult things to do.
